Revolutionizing Central Monitoring

Jarwuan Tucker has seen hospital communication technology from all sides. “I’ve represented the whole communications workflow, from point-of-care solutions like nurse call systems to middleware (technology that enables staff to manage devices and systems) to the devices nurses carry that receive alarm and alert notifications.”

Jarwuan has finally found a home in the middle, with Connexall. “For me, everything boils down to improving the experience,” says Jarwuan. “How do you make clinicians’ lives easier? How do you make patients’ lives better? You do that by equipping your staff with the appropriate tools to provide exceptional care to their patients. That’s what led me to Connexall.”

The power behind Connexall’s Telehub Command Center

Jarwuan is a dedicated Solution Specialist representing Connexall’s Telehub Command Center, a technology solution that improves hospital central monitoring units (CMUs) by organizing alarms into categories and predetermining how each category is handled.

“It’s all about improving the communications between telemetry technicians and clinicians,” Jarwuan explains. “We equip the tele techs with tools that can easily vet actionable versus non-actionable alarms.” When the tele techs see abnormal heart rhythms they can be proactive versus reactive, immediately dispatching only the most critical alarms to the right caregiver at the right time.

Leveraging a strong IT background

“It helps that I have a strong IT background,” says Jarwuan, who earned a degree in computer information science with a concentration in network security. “I started my journey on the technical side of the house.”

Before joining Connexall, Jarwuan served as a Technical Support Specialist, Product Quality Analyst and Sales Engineer for a company that sells point-of-care nurse call systems to hospitals. He moved on to a middleware company and then to a technology company selling communication devices to hospitals. “It’s been helpful to understand the workflow from each phase of the system,” he says.

What most excites Jarwuan about the Telehub Command Center is the power to improve patient care by giving tele techs what they need to be successful at their jobs. “We give the tele techs the ability to detect early deterioration of patients so they can immediately dispatch notifications and get nurses to patients faster. No technology can replace that human element.” The result? “We save more lives.” That, says Jarwuan, is what gets him up in the morning.

The fight against alarm fatigue

Connexall has worked with hospitals for more than six years to enhance their central monitoring units with the Telehub Command Center, the underlying technology that enables tele techs to monitor numerous patients’ heart rhythms and immediately dispatch only the most critical alarms to the proper caregivers.

The Telehub Command Center offers several benefits:

  • The vendor-neutral technology integrates telemetry, electronic medical record (EMR) data and communication solutions in one system.
  • Alarm details are retained, reducing paperwork and enabling proper documentation.
  • All alarm activity and responses are timestamped.
  • Connexall works with the hospital’s CMU to customize the workflow to their needs.
  • The whole CMU team is trained – tele techs AND nurses.

Hospitals that employ CMUs can effectively reduce alarm fatigue, but problems persist. CMUs are fraught with common challenges:

  • False alarms
  • Nuisance alarms
  • Alarm fatigue
  • Time-consuming documentation
  • Communication errors

Connexall overcomes these challenges through collaboration with the CMU staff. “We prepare them to be successful,” says Jarwuan. “They learn the ins and outs of the technology and how to navigate it successfully.” How? “We bring in our Clinical Elevate team.” Clinical Elevate is comprised of nurse informaticists and technologists who come on site to customize workflows and provide role-based training.

“The results have been fantastic,” says Jarwuan. “The Telehub Command Center has been able to save at least one hour per shift per nurse and reduce adverse events by 10 percent or more!”

Real results, real impact

Hospitals with CMUs are encouraged to speak with our Telehub expert Jarwuan. “We’re excited about the results we’ve seen when hospitals improve the experience for their tele techs,” says Jarwuan. “It doesn’t take much—just a few adjustments in workflow and training.”

When the number of false and non-actionable alarms are greatly reduced and tele techs send only the critical alarms that are actionable, trust is built between the tele techs and clinicians. “We’ve helped hospitals transform their CMU operations by solving real, specific challenges.”
